Getting clicks from Google Ads but few qualified leads

Firestoak team · 4 min read

Google Ads clicks show that people are reaching a website. To understand whether a campaign is creating useful opportunities, follow what happens next: completed enquiries, qualified conversations, proposals, and sales. When clicks increase but suitable enquiries remain scarce, check the offer, visitor intent, tracking, and follow-up before increasing spending.

If your campaign needs a clearer plan, explore our Google Ads management services.

Define the enquiry the business wants

Write down what makes a lead suitable. That could include the requested service, location, project scope, and the person's ability to proceed. Choose criteria that the team can apply consistently.

For a hypothetical Barrie contractor, a homeowner seeking an offered service within the actual service area may qualify. A job application, supplier message, or request for work the business does not offer should be recorded separately.

Keep unanswered enquiries in their own category until they can be assessed. Someone who has not yet responded is not necessarily an unsuitable customer.

Check what the campaign counts

Review the actions recorded as conversions. A phone button click shows an attempt to contact the business; it does not prove that a conversation took place. A form submission shows an enquiry; it does not establish that the person needs the service.

Test the enquiry path and confirm that successful submissions are recorded correctly. Look for duplicate events, missing events, and actions labelled as leads that are actually page visits or button interactions.

A campaign report is easier to interpret when each conversion action has a clear meaning. The business should be able to connect recorded enquiries with the messages or calls it received.

Compare visitor intent with the offer

Review available search-term information alongside the ads and destination pages. Does the visitor appear to be looking for the service, researching a problem, looking for employment, or seeking something else?

Some research searches may be valuable early in a buying process. Assess them against the campaign's purpose and observed lead quality rather than assuming every visitor should be ready to buy immediately.

Check location settings and actual enquiry locations too. A business serving Barrie needs to decide which surrounding areas it can profitably serve. Widening the audience is useful only when the business can deliver the work those customers need.

Make the landing page match the ad

An ad promoting a particular service should lead to a page that clearly explains that service. Visitors should not have to search through a general homepage to find the offer they clicked.

Include the information that determines suitability: the work offered, service area, important exclusions, and the next step. Ask only for details that help the team respond or assess the enquiry.

Adding more form fields can filter some enquiries, but it can also discourage suitable customers. Start with the questions the team needs and assess the effect before adding more.

Check what happens after contact

Look at response times, missed calls, and whether anyone owns the follow-up. A useful lead can be lost between the first enquiry and the first conversation.

Keep a simple record of the received date, source where known, requested service, location, qualification status, and sales outcome. Include a short reason for an unsuitable enquiry so repeated patterns are visible.

If suitable leads rarely become proposals, investigate the sales process as well as the campaign. If most enquiries request an unavailable service, review the ads and page wording first.

Compare cost per qualified lead

Cost per enquiry is advertising spend divided by enquiries. Cost per qualified lead is advertising spend divided by qualified leads. Use the same spending definition and comparable time periods when assessing performance.

Consider this hypothetical example, using advertising spend only:

Measure Campaign A Campaign B
Advertising spend CA$1,000 CA$1,000
Enquiries 40 20
Qualified leads 4 8
Cost per enquiry CA$25 CA$50
Cost per qualified lead CA$250 CA$125

Campaign B produces fewer enquiries but more qualified opportunities for the same spend. That still does not establish profitability: compare resulting sales, project value, and delivery costs. Include agency and setup costs separately when evaluating the full investment.

Allow enough time for recent enquiries to progress. Comparing new leads with an older group that has already completed its sales cycle can create a misleading result.

Connect reporting to later outcomes

Once the lead records are reliable, assess whether later outcomes can be connected to campaign reporting. Google documents offline conversion measurement for actions that happen after an ad interaction, such as a later sale. The appropriate setup depends on the business's systems, available data, and applicable consent requirements.

Tracking does not guarantee better results. Its value is helping the business distinguish initial interest from the outcomes it actually wants.

The next decision should follow the quality of the opportunity, not the click total alone.

Before increasing spending, confirm what counts as a lead, inspect enquiry quality, check the landing page, and review follow-up. Make a change for a clear reason and record how its effect will be assessed.
